This page has answers to frequently-asked questions about the University's transition to CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield (CareFirst) as its medical and Rx (prescription) administrator.

  • What does the transition to CareFirst mean in a nutshell?

    • Effective 1/1/2022 the University's new medical and prescription plan will be CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield (CareFirst)
    • The CareFirst plans (Silver, Gold, HSA) are very similar to those offered previously (by UHC)
      • Co-pays and deductibles are unchanged
      • Coverage is designed to be the same as it can be under the new administrator
      • Employee cost for the plan is unchanged for 2022
    • CareFirst medical/Rx cards will arrive in December
  • What should I do to prepare for the transition?

    • Use the Find a Provider lookup to see whether your current providers are in network
      • If you are undergoing certain medical treatments and your provider is not in the BlueCross BlueShield network, you can submit a Continuity of Care request form before the 1/1/2022 effective date of coverage
    • Make sure you have enough of your medications to last through January
    • Call the dedicated CareFirst customer service 833-960-4030 for questions
  • Am I eligible for Continuity of Care?

Continuity of Care is used if you are undergoing certain medical treatments and your provider is not in the BCBS network. Continuity of Care allows members to continue receiving treatment from non-network providers at the in-network benefit level for up to 90 days for certain eligible conditions:
    • bone fractures
    • pregnancy (beyond 24 weeks gestation)
    • newly diagnosed cancer
    • recent heart attack
    • joint replacement
    • other acute trauma or surgery
    • other serious medical condition where the member is in active treatment

The Continuity of Care form must be returned to the address on the form before the 1/1/2022 effective date of your coverage. No forms will be accepted after that date. To ensure no interruption in service, please submit the request form by 12/1/2021.
